Here are the most Frequently Asked Questions about ice dams and Floe.

If you’re looking for answers about ice dams or why Floe is the right solution to address them, you’ve come to the right place.

Ice Dams

1What is an ice dam and how does it form?
An ice dam is a wall of ice that forms on the eave of a pitched roof, or around a sump drain on a flat roof. Due to inadequate ventilation and insulation, heat rising out of the building will melt snow on top of the building. As this melted snow trickles down the roof, it often refreezes at the edge or by the drain where it is colder. This ice accumulation prevents additional water from discharging. If this ice is not cleared, it causes the water to pool up until it moves under the shingles or roof membrane and can cause over $10K in water damages. On some flat roofs, the excessive load can ultimately cause the roof to collapse.

2What’s the biggest problem with ice dams?
The biggest problem with ice dams is water damage. Melted snow that collects behind the ice dam is ultimately forced inside the building. This water can ultimately cause significant damage, including to floors, walls, ceilings, and furniture. It can also lead to mold formation that can be a dangerous health hazard. On flat-roofed buildings, water buildup can even cause roof collapse due to the excessive loading.
3How do I know if I have an ice dam?
Unfortunately many ice dams go undetected until significant damage has already occurred. You should periodically examine your roof during snowy winters. If you see ice buildup—including icicles—on the eave or around the drains, it is likely that you have an ice dam.
4Why is ice dam removal so expensive?
Ice dam removal has been traditionally focused on removing all the ice and snow, which is very costly. This cost is largely due to major electricity consumption for heating cables. Steaming services demand specialized equipment, high insurance rates for the hazardous work, and training to prepare workers to do the job correctly.

Floe

1Why should I invest in a Floe product?
Floe is the most innovative ice dam solution ever. Its data-driven approach makes it far more cost-effective, reliable, safe, and environmentally-friendly than traditional ice dam solutions. It pays for itself by sparing your building or home damage and reducing your energy bill, and finally provides you peace of mind and asset protection from ice dams.
2What roof types and materials is Floe compatible with?
Floe is the first ice dam solution to be compatible with almost all roof types and materials. It can be easily installed on both pitched and flat roofs. It is compatible with a range of roofing materials, including asphalt shingles, metal, and membranes (e.g. EPDM, TPO, PVC).
3How is Floe installed?
Floe comes as a modular kit that can be easily installed on a residential or commercial building by any roofer, contractor, or DIY homeowner or facilities manager. The one-time installation uses different fastening methods depending on the roof type and shape. All of Floe's installation methods are designed to be robust, as well as entirely removable so that they do not void roof warranties.
4Do I need to remove my Floe product from the roof each summer?
No, Floe is designed to be left in place year-round and can provide over a decade of reliable service.
5Is it necessary to install the Floe system on my entire roof?
No, most customers only install the system where ice dam problems exist, which are normally centered around the eaves, gutters, downspouts, valleys, and sump drains.
6Is Floe safe for my building, gardens, and pets?
Floe is the safest and most sustainable ice dam solution available. The system uses a powerful eco-friendly deicing fluid that is transparent, non-toxic, non-corrosive, biodegradable, and pet/plant safe. Intelligent sensors ensure that the deicer is only deployed when necessary, making Floe extremely efficient. Because of this efficiency, Floe’s electricity use and carbon footprint are less than 1% of traditional ice dam solutions.
